#6 Boni & Dodori

Stretching from Kenya's northernmost coastal strip to its immediate hinterland, lies one of the hidden Treasures, a natural gem which is only known to the few people of the ancient resident Aweer tribe and some scientists. The Boni and Dodori National Reserves hold the biggest remaining coastal lowland forest patch in the whole of Eastern Africa and an incredibly rich fauna, including large herds of topi and the highly endangered hirola antelope. The coastal strip with its mangrove forests, creeks and coral reefs, which is home to some of the very rare dugongs is protected by Kiunga Marine National Reserve. This huge cluster of diverse and largely untouched nature could become a popular travel destination in future, as the development of the Lamu port project takes shape and security in neighboring Somalia continues to improve.
